San Remo is a classic Italian resort, which is considered to be the most luxurious on the Ligurian coast of Italy. The heyday of the resort came in the 19th century, when the cream of European society rested here. The city has many beaches, walking streets, long promenade. If you are traveling across Italy, then you can stay here for a few days and visit Genoa, Monaco and Nice.
First of all we went to look for a free beach and found it.
And this is the "royal" beach :) Curiously, the most famous hotel of the city has the same name - Royal Hotel.
Since the 19th century Russian nobility rested in San Remo. Probably, because of that nowadays there's so many Russians in the city. There's also an Orthodox Church.
We walked around the city. It's an ordinary resort city, everything's ok, you can come :)
But there's one place in San Remo which you should definetely see. This is a bike path. We found it only during our visit as there's almost no information about it in the Internet. Prior to 2001, there was a single-track railroad along the sea. In 2008, a bike path appeared in its place, which currently has a length of 24 kilometers from San Remo to San Lorenzo Al Mare. In the future it will be longer, up to 60 kilometers. Of all the bike paths that we have seen, Сycling Riviera is the most advanced. Here you can see surveillance cameras, special SOS phones, benches and rest areas, fountains with drinking water and more. There are also several tunnels. You can rent a bike on the waterfront in San Remo. We rode about 28 km (both ways) and enjoyed the ride.
We stayed at the hotel, which is located in a historic building (booking.com). The hotel has an old and a new building, we lived in the old one. Perhaps long time ago some nobles used to stay here :)
Every year San Remo holds a major Italian song festival.
Getting there: The nearest airports are in Genoa (137 km) and Nice (50 km). From both airports, better take a bus to the railway stations and then go by train to San Remo. There are also direct buses that stop in Arma di Taggia, near San Remo. Buses in the city come to Piazza Colombo. Schedule of some bus routes in the area of the city can be found here. And here's another good website with a schedule of public trasport in the region of Liguria. Every hour trains from Genoa, Turin and Ventimiglia go to San Remo.
