It was built, as you might guess from the name, by the Rothschild and Ephrussi families. The latter are bankers from Odessa (Ukraine), who became quite influential in Europe and intermarried with the Rothschilds. After the death of Baroness Beatrice Ephrussi de Rothschild in 1934, the villa and works of art were transferred to the French Academy of Fine Arts and became available to all.
Around the villa there is a huge park on four hectares consisting of various thematic zones: Spain, France, Japan, Florence and others. There are waterfalls, shady avenues, fountains and even a grotto. With audio guide you can wander around the villa and the park for 3 hours. Check official website for opening hours.
The territory of the villa offers good views of the coast.
According to the office for tourism at Cape Ferrat, some time ago there was an offer from an unnamed Russian oligarch to buy the villa. Any amount of money was offered, but the sale was denied.
Getting there: there is parking on the territory of the villa and near the entrance N 43 41.696 E 7 19.758. Take bus 81 from Nice (stop Promenade des Arts, N 43 42.043 E 7 16.720) to Plage de Passable / Rothschild stop (opening hours).
