Ukraine

Since we are originally from Ukraine, we can tell about the country pretty much. Ukraine is very different from the Western European countries in terms of tourism. It's not difficult to travel in the large cities, but the small towns have almost no touristic infrastructure.

Tourist routes in the Ukraine for independent travelers

Weekend trips from Kyiv

Places of Interest

The country has enough architectural and natural attractions, but the government is not interested in many of them at the moment. Without adequate funding, the sights continue to deteriorate every year.

Most attractions are located in western Ukraine, in the Carpathian Mountains, Crimea and Kyiv.

The most interesting places in Ukraine, in our opinion:

Some movies in which you can see Ukraine:

House of Flying Daggers (2004) - Chinese historical action drama with the Hong Kong stars Andy Lau and Zhang Ziyi. The film is almost entirely shot in the Ukrainian Carpathians, and very well shows the beauty of the mountains. It snowed so early (October) that the filmmakers had to change the script and the film. But, as a result, film was nominated for an Oscar for cinematography (video).

Battleship Potemkin (1925) - old, but fairly well-known film, has repeatedly called one of the best in the history of cinema. Some scenes of the film have become iconic and have been used in dozens of other movies (video).

Taras Bulba (2009) - a large-scale film about the life of Ukrainian Cossacks. Very well shown Khortytsya island and Khotyn Fortress (video).

Everything Is Illuminated (2005) - adventure tragicomedy in the road movie style with Elijah Wood. All events take place in Ukraine, mainly near Odessa (video).

D'Artagnan and Three Musketeers (1979) - a famous Soviet film based on the work of Alexandre Dumas. Filmed in Lviv, Lviv region, Odessa and the Odessa region.
