Drachenburg Castle was built in 1882-1884 by order of Baron Stefan von Zarter, a wealthy stockbroker from Bonn. The castle is decorated with wall paintings and tapestries, which depict scenes from the heroic past of Germany, ancient sagas and legends.

During the war, a park near the castle housed the German air defense facilities, so the castle was almost destroyed by the allies. Most of its valuables were taken by the Americans. In 1971, during the beginning of the ruins demolition procedure, a private sponsor appeared, thanks to which we can now observe this wonderful building on the slope of mount Drachenfels.

At the top of the hill are ruins of the Drachenfels castle that was built in 1138-1167. Drachenfels translates as a "the rock of dragon" and involves a lot of legends about some mythical dragon that used to live here.

Brochure about the castle is available here.
