Zugspitze is the highest mountain in Germany (2,962 meters). At the top of the mountain is the border between Germany and Austria. You can get up from the two countries, but from the German side it is much more interesting.
From Garmisch-Partenkirchen rides a rack train that goes inside the mountain and takes passengers to the height of 2,600 meters, to the intermediate station. Then you go to the top by cable car.
On your way you will definitely see an interesting building on a hillside. This is Schneefernerhaus, a former hotel in the Alps, which is currently used as environmental research station. From 1945 to 1952 it was a place of rest and recovery of the U.S. military.
On May 15, 1965 there was an avalanche near the upper train station. 10 people died and 21 were injured. Public service of preventing avalanches appeared as a result of this tragedy.
You can go down either by train or by cable car to the Eibsee lake and then continue by train (see the scheme).
