Urk is a small town located on a polder. Although the polder was drained not so long ago, Urk is quite an old town, as it used to exist on an island. The main occupation of the inhabitants is fishing, and it has one of the largest fleets in the Netherlands. Now the situation in this industry has greatly improved, as previously hundreds of fishermen died every year. Recently, the local authorities have been developing the tourism industry.
Urk is now home to 21,000 people (2024), although before World War II the number of inhabitants was only a couple thousand. The population growth is due to the significant expansion of the area.
A curious fact, the size of the average family here is larger than in other parts of the country, which is why Urk was even the poorest municipality in the country per person.
The town has a nice promenade, where we took a walk. From the interesting things, we note fishing boats and fishing gear, which are not touristy, but real.
