The 30-km Afsluitdijk dam was built in 1927-1933 as a part of "Zuiderzee" project. In those years the Netherlands actively built protection against sea water, as tides and bad weather regularly caused damage. Despite the enormous size, the construction itself proceeded quite smoothly. Until 2010 it was the longest sea dam in the world.

As a result of the construction, a huge lake Zuiderze was formed, initially salty and later fresh. In addition to flood protection the second main goal of the project was the drainage of wetlands and the formation of new areas for agriculture (polders). Here you can see new lands.

If you travel around the country by car and drive along the dam, here N 52 58.169 E 5 06.524 is a parking lot, a bridge over the road and a small old restaurant where we had lunch. There is also a cycle path on the dam.
