The name of the hotel is not accidental since the French writer Victor Hugo visited the town several times, there is even his museum here.
The main attraction in the town is Vianden Castle, founded back in the XI century. From 1417 until the end of the XVII century it belonged to the Oranien-Nassau family. Around 1621 the castle was rebuilt in the Renaissance style and took on a modern appearance.
After the French Revolution, in 1820, it was sold at auction and everything of value that was inside, even the doors and windows, were sold off. Since then it stood in ruins until 1977, when it was nationalized and restoration began at the expense of EU and private investors.
The castle can be visited, check the opening hours on the official website https://castle-vianden.lu/gb/besuch/, but we just walked around the town and looked at it from different points. There are several lookouts, we visited all of them. One, right by the road 49.932307, 6.201535.
Vianden has a cableway (49.936416, 6.206372), which is very atypical for such places. It leads to a café-restaurant with an alternative view of the castle.
Another view is from the outdoor pool area (49.937216, 6.209431), but it's only open during the warm season.
This is the view from the road to the pool (49.937063, 6.206818).
And these are the views from the drone
