The original castle appeared in the 13th century. It was surrounded by moats with water that existed until 1840, when they were removed as unnecessary. Only a small and unremarkable residential tower remained from the first castle. Since 1574, the castle was rebuilt in the Weser Renaissance style with a garden and a park.
After the war, the castle became a home for refugees. Since the 1960s, it was decided to give it to people of art. The organization "Schloßstraße 8" was created in the castle and many famous artists, architects and photographers opened their studios.
Currently used for various cultural events.
Inside the castle can be visited only by appointment.
