The first mention of the castle dates back to 1307, when the local feudal lord Heinrich von Schenck received it as a gift from the margrave Hermann von Brandenburg. At the beginning of the 15th century, the structure was changed and used as a hunting castle.
After the fire in 1483, the castle was rebuilt in its present form, but later it was constantly rebuilt. This is clear from the architecture, even the color of bricks are different in different parts of the castle.
Like other noble estates, the castle was taken away from the owners by the Soviet occupation authorities. Inside they equipped a hospital for patients with tuberculosis and a psychiatric clinic, and in the late 80s a nursing home. In 2000, it was planned to re-open the castle as a hotel, but the owner became bankrupt and at the moment the building is not in use.
