Sharjah is the third biggest city in the United Arab Emirates. Satellite city of Dubai. In fact, it is difficult to find a visible border between the cities. But you will definetely see the taxi fee increase as crossing the border costs 20 dirham.

Despite the fact that we lived in Sharjah, we walked in the city only a couple of times. Still Dubai, located nearby, is much more interesting.

Sharjah is attractive primarily by the presence of relatively inexpensive hotels on the first shore line. There are not many hotels, but in Dubai the number of beach hotels is even smaller and they are too expensive. We were staying in Beach Hotel Sharjah. As for "relatively inexpensive", judge for yourself: our hotel cost $200-300 per night per room, though it looked as an ordinary 3-star hotel. Of course, hotels not on the first line will be much cheaper.

Shuttles can take you from the hotels to Dubai metro stations, but they go rarely, so get ready to order a taxi (about 40-50 dirham). There is only one main road between Sharjah and Dubai and almost always it is loaded. We stuck in traffic jams several times for an hour, consider this fact.

Real history of the city began about 100 years ago, after the first Islamic school had been opened. The emirate keeps cultural heritage of the country and is proud of it. The city has more than 20 museums and historical areas. If you're not a big fan of museums, then take a walk in the downtown, along the waterfronts around the Khalid lake. Every December the World Cup of Formula 1 on water is held here. It is very nice here both in the afternoon and in the evening, when the lights are on.

There is a beautiful aquarium and a big Ferris wheel in the downtown.

Getting there: Sharjah has its own international airport, which is the base for AirArabia, the first low cost airlines in the region, established in 2003. From Dubai the easiest way to get a taxi is from the metro station. We used the Deira City Centre station, but now several new stations have been built, so, according to the map, you can use the Al Qiyadah metro station. Although public transport is much cheaper, it goes rarely, so we used a taxi.
