Mujib canyon is probably the least known but the most impressive place in Jordan. We got there by pure coincidence, as the canyon is not advertised by travel agencies and there is not much information on the Internet. We had an individual tour in Jordan and on the very first day we had to visit the Jesus Christ's baptism site. We didn't really want to go there, but it was on the program and we didn't know any other places. Upon arrival we found out that we had to wait for about two hours. Then we asked our guide to go to somewhere else nearby and he took us to this wonderful canyon.
Mujib canyon is located in the Wadi Mujib nature reserve, which lies at a depth of 400 meters below sea level and therefore is the most low-lying nature park. The entrance is directly from the road running along the Dead Sea.
Upon arrival you will sign the papers about responsibility for your own lives and put on lifejackets. I strongly recommend putting on the jacket. The place not so dangerous, but sh*t happens and at least it will be easier to fall. It will be great if you have rubber slippers for bathing; otherwise you should wear sneakers. Don't go there without shoes.
The length of the canyon is 1.5 km. It is very similar to the canyon in Petra, but with one huge difference - water flows here and its level varies. At the time of our visit it was first ankle-deep and then gradually reached the waist.
Periodically you'll encounter the barriers. To overcome them, you should apply certain physical strength and agility.
Another important point is the camera. As you can see from the previous photo, you need to think twice before taking expensive equipment with you. All photos in this article were made by a small high impact underwater camera. Do not do as a tourist on the next picture did, although we warned him. He took a large SLR and didn't put on a life jacket.
There is a small number of tourists here and they are mostly Jordanians. We met only three groups of 7-8 people. At the end of the canyon a large waterfall is waiting for you.
Getting there: Map of the Natural Park of Wadi Mujib. The canyon is located on the road to Aqaba, 30 km to the south from the hotels at the Dead Sea. The entrance is near the Mujib bridge. It is hard to get here by public transport, so take either a rented car or a taxi. But there are problems with the taxis as it is very difficult to find them at the Dead Sea. If you have enough money, you can call a taxi from Amman, it will cost you about $100. Another option is to ask the hotel staff. Probably somebody has a relative with a car who can take you to Mujib for money. And the third option is to catch a car, since all cars go in that direction.
