Despite the fact that now only the ruins remained, during the Venetian rule here was a city with two churches, mansions, tanks with water and boiling oil, a hospital, a prison, significant food reserves and a secret tunnel that allowed to escape from the castle. The tunnel though was not found, although his descriptions exist.
The castle was in a very good strategic position, on a high hill. From the observation towers the pirate ships were visible 20 kilometers away.
After the capital was moved to Agrostoli in 1757, the castle lost all significance and was simply abandoned. However, because of the beautiful views we recommend to visit it.
The castle is open from 8:30 to 15:30, but you can come at any time. For example, we could not get to the castle, but there is a great viewpoint near the gate.
Getting there: during the low season you can drive up to the castle itself N 38 08.290 E 20 33.231. At any time you can park on the main street, 200 meters from the castle N 38 08.297 E 20 33.378. The nearest town is Peratata, it can be reached from Agrostoli by buses (schedule) that go to Poros, Skala, Spartia. Then 1700 meters on foot from the bus stop to the castle.
