St. Peter-Ording is the mayor resort of Schleswig-Holstein, the only seaside resort in Germany with a sulphur spring. The geography of this place is very interesting. The coast is very flat and tides can be up to 3 meters. Therefore, between the sandy beach and the hotels is a 1 kilometer buffer zone.

Because of such an unusual territory, St. Peter-Ording never had a port and fishing industry was never established. The first hotel was built in 1877 and from that time the village became a resort. In 1953 the first spring was found and since then the development has significantly accelerated. Nowadays resort has all the necessary infrastructure.

The buffer zone is a reserve where live birds and small amphibians.

To give people possibility to reach the water, wooden elevated walkways were build.

In general, that's the main entertainment for tourists - walk along these paths to the sea.

At the end of such walkways, on a sandy beach, there are the famous houses on stilts. Usually there are restaurants, toilets and rooms with equipment for surfing or kiting.

Places with such houses are marked on the next map. Near the uppermost house there is a parking lot which can be reached by car for an additional fee. You can even drive on the beach.

And, of course, the symbol of Germany - beach baskets.

Due to the fact that the sea is shallow, almost nobody swim. Although in summer the water temperature is quite normal. But this is common practice, the same situation is in most northern beach resorts.
