The Luisium palace and gardens were created between 1774 and 1778 as a gift to Princess Louise von Brandenburg-Schwedt, wife of Prince Leopold III von Anhalt-Dessau. Included in the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the garden kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz[edit].

Not all the buildings have survived to this day. The greenhouses were dismantled in the 19th century. After the reunification of Germany in 1990 the garden was reconstructed. The Luisium palace was not accessible to visitors for 20 years. It was reopened on September 24, 1998, the princess' birthday, after extensive restoration work.

The interior had to be reassembled from various collection sites. The furniture dates back to when it was built or was accurately reproduced. The wallpaper is woven from historical patterns. The garden is freely accessible. The castle can be visited as part of a guided tour for a fee.
