Bad Nenndorf is a small town near Hannover. The prefix Bad tells us that we are in a spa town.
Healing properties of local sulfur water were discovered in 1546 and in the middle of the 18th century first resort was built on the site. As in other similar places you feel the smell immediately at the approach to the town center. In 1866 Bad Nenndorf became the Royal Prussian state spa and actively developed with the support of Berlin. Mineral water is used to treat diseases related to the cardiovascular system, gastrointestinal disorders , gynecological disorders and diabetes. In addition here are the leading plastic surgery centers.
Now the resort looks like a typical place for the elderly, but there is a nice park which will be interesting to tourists. It is a large resort park with a few historical buildings. We were interested in the former bath house built in 1906, which is now turned into hotel. It looks like a real palace.
The park also worth a visit.
There is an interesting tree on the central alley popular with children. It is a copper beech, and if you go a little further, you will find a unique alley with such trees, we have a separate article about it.
In 2024, a nice playground opened in the Kurpark
In 2026 the city will host a very large horticultural festival and there is a lot more planned.
If you are driving and have free time, you can also stop by the city spring (52.326611, 9.360806), from which 173,000 liters of mineral water flow out daily.
Unfortunately, Bad Nenndorf has sad pages of history. In 1945-47 in the the city was a British secret prison for German prisoners of war and Soviet spies (Combined Services Detailed Interrogation Centre). Here widely used torture and medical experiments on human beings.
