A picturesque castle on a mountain, visible from any road, around the town of Augustusburg (Augustusburg). The mountain is called Schellenberg, and the castle belonged to the Saxon Electors of the House of Wettin.

In 1210-1230 the first fortress was built on the mountain. In the first half of the 16th century, it burned down due to a lightning strike. The new castle was laid out in 1568 by Augustus, Elector of Saxony, and was used as a hunting castle. During the Thirty Years' War in 1632, it was sacked by Croatian troops.

The castle has a well 130 meters deep, one of the deepest in Germany. Now the castle houses several museums. We arrived in the evening, however, and the museums were already closed.
