Alaverdi will be insteresting for many tourists because of its location. The fortress and monastery, built by the king of Kakheti Kvirike III the Great, is located in the middle of the Alazan valley. The cathedral that is located inside the walls is the third tallest in Georgia (after the Bagrat Temple and Tsminda Sameba in Tbilisi).
It is interesting that at the beginning of the XI century, when the church was built, Kakheti didn't play any significant role in Georgia. Therefore, construction of such huge cathedral is amazing. Several times it was looted and destroyed by earthquakes. Several kings of Kakheti are buried on the territory.
Taking pictures is prohibited inside the cathedral and even inside the walls.
Getting there: Alaverdi is located between the major highways. It is 20 km from Telavi and 17 km from Ahmeta, you can go by taxi. There is information about the minibuses Telavi - Alaverdi, ask about it in Telavi.
