The building got its present appearance in 1880, when it was rebuilt after a fire. In 1919 the castle belonged to Count Henrik Bille Brahe Selby. As a result of land reforms, the state began to collect new taxes. The castle was valued at DKK 650,000 ($3 million in 2018), the owner was offered to pay more than DKK 260,000 ($1 million) in taxes. The count did not have such money and he put the castle up for sale. But in those years such estate could be bought only by a state that offered no more than DKK 175,000 ($0.7 million). Thus the count became bankrupt and lost the estate.
In subsequent years the castle became a hospital for mentally ill women, which was closed in 1993. For several years the castle stood in desolation, until in 1996 it was redeemed and turned into a hotel. The hotel is not on booking.com, but it is on many other booking websites, just google for Hvedholm Slotshotel.
If you are traveling by car, this is a very good place to spend the night, we recommend. If you do not spend the night in the castle, then you can walk freely through the park. As for the interior - it is not clear, as the castle is private. But inside there is a restaurant, I think, if you visit a restaurant, it will not be a problem if you walk through the castle afterwards.
