Bears in Romania

Romania is the country with the largest bear population in Europe, not counting Russia. In 2017 government even allowed hunting for 175 bears to reduce their number. The EU Commission authorized this step considering the increasing number of attacks on people and various damage (video).

If you want to see wild bears, then Romania is a perfect choice. We did not even realize how simple it is. Search Google for "bear watching". We were in Brasov, so found this website http://www.absolute-nature.ro/. Trip cost 45 euros per person, you will be taken to the spot by car from Brasov. It is worth saying that we were rather skeptical about this trip and believed that we would not see the bears.

The site is located only half an hour from Brasov. Then you will walk through the forest to a wooden booth with a glass wall. After 1 minute, we saw first bears. Of course, we knew that the helper put the food in the forest 5 minutes before our arrival, but still it was amazing.

In an hour we saw 3 she-bears, 7 he-bears, 5 cubs and one fox. Moms even managed to fight, we have this on video. And all this from a distance of 15-20 meters, sometimes they come even closer. Curiously, bears know about people in the booth, but while you are inside - they do not care.


























And now an interesting fact. All the big and beautiful bears that you saw on the previous pictures are females. Male bears at this time of the year look like this. They are smaller.
