Imagine that you are driving on a lonely road in the mountains, at an altitude of about 1 km above sea level and around the extremely harsh terrain, but near one of the lakes stands a lone hotel (booking.com). The first building on this site was erected in 1870 during the construction of the road from Skjåk to Stryn and Geiranger. When the road was completed, Grotli became a transit point on the crossroads between the east and west of the country, with post office, telephone and bus station. The hotel was built in 1903-1905. For over a hundred years it's been managed by representatives of one family. Inside there are beautiful interiors and, curiously, free WiFi. Where do they get Internet in such places ? :)
There are many beautiful places for walking and fishing around the hotel, so if you stop for a few days, you'll find what to do. There's a summer ski center 19 kilometers from the hotel, which works from late May (http://www.strynsommerski.no).
In general, it's a great place to stay if you are traveling by car and want to enjoy the silence.
Getting there: The hotel is located on the road between Lom and Geiranger/Stryn.
