Leikanger is a small town on the shore of the Sognefjord, the second largest fjord in the world. We spent a great outdoor day there.
We stayed at the Sognefjord Hotel A/S, which is located in a scenic place on the shore. It's a great base for hiking and cycling along the fjord and in the mountains.
There are free bikes and boats near the hotel. We used them both but our main trip was by bicycles.
Not far away there are two waterfalls, and they have been our goal for the day. The first waterfall (Kvinnafossen) is located in 14 kilometers (map). You need to go along the road in the direction of Leikanger and further. There are not too much vehicles on the road. And it's impossible to get lost, you're just driving along the fjord and admiring the scenery.
The waterfall is big and if you want to take a closer look at it, then climb up the hill.
The second waterfall is 2 km away from the hotel in other direction (map). You can walk there for half an hour.
Getting there: On this website find the bus schedule to Leikanger from different cities in Norway. The Sogndal Airport is located 43 kilometers from Leikanger. From the airport first take a bus to Songdal, and then another bus to Leikanger (schedule). Widerøe and other airlines fly here daily from Oslo and Bergen. The nearest railway station Flam is located 100 kilometers away (http://www.nsb.no). In summer use a speedboat from there to get to Leikanger, find the schedule here (you need this route: Bergen - Sogn - Flåm - Bergen).
