The Briksdal Glacier is one of the major natural wonders of Norway. It's a part of a massive Jostedalsbreen glacier, the largest in continental Europe.
The size of the glacier is changing. Sometimes it grows, sometimes decreases. In 2015 it looks not as nice, as before (photo).
In the 1990s, the glacier attracted the world's attention, as it grew, while all other glaciers in Europe decreased. The glacier ends with a lake, which was formed due to its melting. Don't approach the glacier closely, sometimes it's dangerous (like on this video).
The glacier can be reached by boat, the prices start from $40.
A river flows out of the lake. From the car park you should walk about 2.5 km along this river to the lake. On your way you'll pass a great waterfall that'll make you wet :)
Around the car park there's a cafe, a souvenir shop, and a variety of entertainment for children and adults.
The surrounding scenery is extremely picturesque.
During our visit in 2009, it was still possible to take a fairly extreme glacier tour. But now it seems impossible. Other glaciers nearby are available for the walks, look for information about the tours here. Prices start from $100 for a 5-6-hour walk.
Getting there: The nearest town to the glacier is Olden, from where you can take a taxi (24 km). There's a tourist bus from Stryn which awaits the tourists near the glacier. The bus leaves at 9:30 am and returns at 1:40 pm, the ticket costs $11 (schedule). Stryn can be reached from Bergen or Oslo by express bus (schedule).
