Bagnoregio is the most beautiful Italian town of the ones that we've seen. It is situated on a tall cliff, and you can reach it via the long bridge (Mercatello). The place is very beautiful and we were lucky with the weather.
The town is very old, founded by the Etruscans 2500 years ago. Actually, on the pictures you see only the "old town" (Civita di Bagnoregio). A new town is lager and located nearby. Since 1695, when there was the first major earthquake in the region, the residents began to move. It's difficult to live in the old town even nowadays, so the number of inhabitants varies from 10 in winter to 100 in summer. The town is successfully used as a tourist destination.
There are no cars and motorcycles here, but there's a lot of flowers, old houses, cats and cozy courtyards. Two observation decks offer the best views of the town. There are parkings near both of them. If you come to the bridge, be sure to climb also to the top observation deck, as it offers the best views.
There's a local museum in Civita di Bagnoregio, information is here.
Getting there: By bus from Orvieto, 2 euros (timetable). The bus leaves from Piazza Cahen, which is located near the top station of the cable car. The bus stops in the main town of Bagnoregio, from where you need to walk to Civita di Bagnoregio for about 15-20 minutes or use a minibus (timetable). There are buses from many other cities, the schedule can be viewed here. The nearest railway stations are Viterbo and Orvieto, then by bus. The nearest airport is Fiumicino in Rome, then by train and by bus.
