One of several popular caves on the island of Crete. The visit is quite easy, the cave itself is small. As you can see from the photo, we were there with a small child and there were no problems.

During excavations inside were found implements from the late Neolithic period (4000 - 3000 BC). In 2100 - 1600 BC the cave was used as a sanctuary. It is also mentioned in Greek mythology.

In 1823, tragic events took place in the cave. During the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire, 370 women and children and 30 armed men took refuge in the cave. The Turks were unable to dislodge them for several months, and then began to pour smoke inside the cave, as a result of which absolutely everyone in the cave died.
