The Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen, founded in 1477, has had the greatest influence on the city’s development. It is one of Germany’s oldest universities, and it has shaped the character of the city. To this day, Tübingen remains a student hub, with students making up a significant portion of the population. The famous “Stocherkahn” student rowboats can be seen along the banks of the Neckar River (48.519389, 9.056361), a popular pastime during the warmer months. In addition to the large river, a canal flows right through the heart of the old town.
The old town has remained almost unchanged. We strolled through the narrow streets, admired the half-timbered houses and small squares, and climbed up to Hohentübingen Castle, which was originally a medieval fortress and later became part of the university. The town is associated with many famous figures such as Johannes Kepler and Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel who studied and worked here. This further underscores its significance as a center of science and culture.
