The historic Stintfang Hill is a remnant of the former Hamburg ramparts from the 17th century and is named after the large quantities of smelt fish (Stint) that used to be caught here. The southwesternmost bastion of the city's fortifications was located here.

Between 1802 and 1811, a private observatory was built on what is now Stintfang. It was demolished between 1811 and 1814 when the French, during the occupation, rebuilt part of the old fortifications. After the end of the French occupation of Hamburg in 1815, the ramparts were finally demolished and turned into parks.

After the Second World War there was a plan to build a luxury hotel here, but instead a youth hostel was built, which now looks completely alien in such an important historical place.

A vineyard can be seen on the slopes, it has been planted several times as vandals have destroyed it several times, the last time it was planted in 2022. It is cared for by volunteers.
