An important palace and park complex in Thuringia. It was rebuilt many times and therefore contains elements of many different architectural styles.
The original buildings date back to the 13th century; the surviving Renaissance tower was built in 1530-1550 by Günter XL, Count of Schwarzburg. The main buildings, in Baroque style, were erected in the 1680s, during the time of Christian Wilhelm, Prince of Schwarzburg-Saundershausen. The newer wings of the palace were built in rococo style after 1764, during the reign of Christian Günther III, duke of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen. Since 1994, the palace belongs to the state, and hosts a museum.
