Ippenburg Castle (Schloss Ippenburg)

Aristocratic residence in the neo-Gothic style, built on the site of older, ruined estates, in 1862 - 1867. Belongs to the von dem Bussche-Ippenburg family for over 600 years. The castle and the park are known as a place of annual garden festivals.


Ippenburg Castle is 600-year-old ancestral home of a noble family Bussche-Ippenburg. The descendants live there today, the castle is privately owned, so there are restrictions on visiting.

The castle was rebuilt several times. The first building dates back to the late 14th century. The castle stood until 1811 and was demolished as outdated. The second castle was built in the Baroque style and stood until 1862. In 1862-67 a new modern castle in neogothic style was built. In 1930 it was overhauled, central heating was added and bathrooms were equipped.

The castle is surrounded by a beautiful park full of flowers and unusual sculptures. In 2010 the gardening festival of Lower Saxony was held here. Be sure to check the official website before visiting, as the gardens are only open on certain days.
