Ringelheim Castle is a former monastery, founded in the tenth century. Around the castle there's an English style park with a lake. The park was founded in 1847 for the Count Adolf von der Decken. Behind the castle there's a baroque Church of St. Abdon and Senonian (1694) known for its organ and a crucifix from the workshop of the Prince-Bishop Bernward of Hildesheim. Near the church there's a tomb and museum of family von der Decken, opened in 1840.
Since 1942, the castle was used as a sanatorium for tuberculosis patients. In recent years investors who want to buy the castle have appeared. Among them is BIC (company that produces pens), music academy and an investor who wants to make a luxury retirement home on the basis of the castle. But, as we see from the state of the castle, its future is still uncertain as for 2012.
Getting there: By regional train from Hannover (1 hour) or Braunschweig (20 minutes). The castle is within a 5-minute walk from the station.
