Marienburg Castle is not very popular with tourists, but in my opinion it is one of the most beautiful castles in Europe. The one that looks like a real castle. It was designed by the German architect Conrad Wilhelm Hase in 1857-1867.

Several years ago head of the Welf family, Prince Ernst August (husband of Princess Caroline of Monaco) held an auction where 20,000 items belonging to the family were sold. Several million euros was spent on reconstruction. In 2010-11 the castle was closed for renovation.

In 2018, the state bought (took away) the castle from the prince for 1 euro, on which the Green party insisted. The reason for this transaction was the absence of 27 million euros to be spent on repairs. The prince and his family will be able to use the castle three times a year for official events. Repairing will begin in 2020.

The castle tours are in German, but audio guides are available as well. The interior is quite rich, so we recommend visiting it.

Unfortunately, the beautiful views on the first photos can only be seen only from the air. The best view of the castle from the ground opens from the road from Nordstemmen, you can find this spot by going / driving down to the river.

Getting there: The easiest way to get to the castle is to take a regional train from Hannover to the Nordstemmen station and then walk up to the castle for about 3 km. For the first time we went by bicycles from Hannover (about 18 km), and for the second time we went by train with the bikes.
