In 2011 on the tourist map of Ukraine appeared a new object, Radomysl Castle. It is located in the town of Radomyshl, Zhytomyr region, in 100 kilometers from Kyiv.
In 1612 the monks of Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra built the Papirnya (paper factory) which was the first in Central Ukraine. To strengthen protection from the attacks, landscape features were considered while choosing a location for the construction. The founder of the factory was a famous religious and public person of those times, the Archimandrite of Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra Elisey Pletenetsky (1550-1624). Reconstruction of the Radomysl Castle was made in his honor.
In 1902 the building was rebuilt using the red brick and became a mill. In 1989 the mill produced the last batch of flour and was abandoned. During the next two decades it has been gradually destroyed and turned into a spontaneous town dump.
In 2007 reconstruction of the "paper factory" was started by Olga Bohomolets, a famous doctor, philanthropist and social activist. She created a historical and cultural center with the world's only museum of Ukrainian domestic icon.
During the reconstruction, which lasted more than 4 years, the building has been cleared of 60 tons of trash and restored. The neighborhood was drained, raised above the level of the Myka river and the landscape park was created. Repair and restoration works were done in compliance with ancient construction technologies (XVII-XIX centuries).
Through the area where the castle is located passes "The Way of Kings" (Via Regia). It is an ancient and the world's longest overland trade route. Over 2,000 years ago the Romans built a network of military roads in Gaul and Germany. These roads still link the major cities of Western Europe. The Franks in the VII-IX centuries, and Holy Roman Empire in the tenth century spread their trade and military interests to the East, and the existing roads were extended to the Slavic lands and Kyiv. In Ukraine the road passed through Mykhorod (ancient name of Radomyshl), Zhytomyr, Rivne, Lutsk, and Volodymyr-Volynskyi. The Radomysl Castle became the first facility in Ukraine that has received a diploma of the project "Via Regia, Cultural Route of the Council of Europe."
The castle is surrounded by the water and the landscape park. There are dozens of species of rare plants there, also otters, minks, beavers, and storks. In the water there is a lot of fish with quite large specimens, such as carps that can weigh up to 6 kilos. The park also hosts a collection of antique sculptures of XVII-XVIII centuries.
The castle offers tours for visitors every day except for Monday and Tuesday. The castle has a park, a hotel, a restaurant and a concert hall. We recommend that you visit the museum even if you are not a fan of church. It has no analogs in the world and makes a good impression.
Getting there: By bus to Radomyshl from the Zhytomyrska metro station in Kyiv. Travel time is 1 hour 20 minutes and the cost is $3. From the bus station you can walk (3 km) or take a taxi for $2. Take a phone number of the taxi driver to be able to return to the bus station.
место уютное, интересное. больше всего поразил музей икон. территория вокруг замка на самом деле совсем небольшая. вызывает большое уважением сам факт воссоздания здания на данном месте - проделана огромная работа. спасибо Ольге Богомолец!
