The city of Chernivtsi is often called "a small Vienna" or "a mini Paris". In general, this city can be compared with any ancient town in Europe. Just visit it for a weekend to relax and walk along the ancient streets.
The most interesting place in Chernivtsi is the former residence of the Orthodox Metropolitan Bishops of Bukovyna and Dalmatia. Now this architectural complex hosts the Chernivtsi National University. It's really a beautiful place.
We recommend taking a guided tour ($3-4) to see the interior of the University. You can ask a guard at the entrance about the tour.
During the Soviet era, the Department of Computer Engineering was located in the Church of Three Saints and the seminary building, and a huge computer was installed in the church. The University management tried hard to preserve the church interior, so everything valuable was disguised by a cloth.
The downtown is very nice, and the pedestrian Kobylyanska Street is one of the most beautiful streets in Ukraine. At night the city is colored with lights, so we recommend taking a night walk through the Theatre Square and along the Kobylyanska Street.
Getting there: We recommend taking a night train from Kyiv. It's too difficult to go by car. There are two ways to get there by car: either via Zhytomyr, Khmelnytsky, Kamianets-Podilskyi or via Uman, Vinnytsia, Bar, Kamianets-Podilskyi. Roads in Khmelnytsky, Vinnytsia and Chernivtsi regions are bad, so the entire journey will take at least 7-8 hours.
